Kalayan group was formed in 1989. People from varied working fields come together under the leadership of Mathura Kalauny with a single purpose in mind, to stage plays. Months were spent I reading and discussing the play till the group zeroed in on Dr. Shanker Shesh's 'KOMAL GANDHAR'. Komal Gandhar is a period play based on the Mahabharat. It was baptism by fire for the group. It took six months to produce that play on a shoe string budget. Three shows of the play were staged. Publicity was only through word of mouth. Not many came to see the play but those who came were emotionally moved beyond words.

The group has never looked back after Komal Gandhar. It has been one play a year since then. Though the group had originally decided to stage Hindi and English plays. It however stuck to Hindi Plays. It found Hindi plays more challenging and emotionally satisfying.

Kalayan has positioned itself as the only local theatre organization engaged in producing quality plays. 'KOMAL GANDHAR' by Dr. Shankar Shesh, 'ASHAD KA EK DIN' by Mohan Rakesh, 'MISS ALUWALIA' by Shankar Chatterjee are a few of the many plays that have been highly appreciated by the audience. Of late, the group has become a sort of launching pad for TV artists.

The group has a following of 2000 plus audience who eagerly await the staging of every Kalayan production. They are generally young upwardly mobile executives and businessmen.

The group consists of dedicated stage artists and professional support staff. The strength of the group varies from 15 to 50 due to members changing jobs, moving away on transfers and marriages. When the group is not busy staging plays it meets once every two months for play reading, poetry recitation and just for being together. Kalayan Patrika was conceived in one such meeting.
