The play provides a window into the life and time of the poet Kalidas. Mallika a village belle is deeply in love with Kalidas. It is Mallika's insistence that Kalidas goes to Ujjaini becomes famous. His love for his land people and pangs of seperation from Mallika find expression in the great works of literature he creates. Mallika remains in the village waiting for her loved one to return. Kalidas does return to Mallika but a broken & destitute man, to start life afresh and to amend the mistake of allowing himself to be seperated from Mallika. Do they get united?
